Asian Pork Deli Sandwich
This Asian Pork sandwich is seasoned with ingredients commonly used in Asian cooking; including garlic, ginger, soy sauce, and rice vinegar. It also has
hot sauce made with mayo and sirracha. If you like really hot sauce you can just use the sirracha and not mix in any mayo dressing. The minced pork is bought fresh, the seasonings are
added, and then the pork is pan fryed. You can also make your pork patties and freeze them. The ingredients will make 2 - 3 pork deli sandwiches, depending on pork patty size.
Ingredients For This Recipe
1 lb of fresh minced pork(makes 3-4 patties)
1.5 tablespoon of minced garlic
1.5 tablespoon of minced ginger
1 tablespoon of soy sauce
1/2 cup shredded Asian lettuce or any leafy lettuce like roman lettuce and iceberg lettuce.
1/4 cup shredded carrots
1/2 teaspoon rice or white wine vinegar
2 tablespoons sirracha sauce
1.5 tablespoon of vege mayo(or your preferred mayo brand)
1 freshly baked baquette cut in two or three 6 inch lengths
Make Your Pork Patties
Buy the fresh minced pork, 1 lb, at your local grocery store. Put the pork into a medium size glass or ceramic bowl. Add the minced garlic, 1.5 tablespoon, and the minced ginger,
1.5 tablespoon; and add the the soy sauce, 1 tablespoon (reduced sodium brand).
Using a fork or spatula blend all the ingredients together.
Next, make the patties, by using your hands, or just using the fork to shape them in the frying pan. Make them the shape of the baquette 6" deli bread.
Fry them in a non stick pan, until cooked thoroughly, about 10 minutes each side. If you have a pan with a glass lid, they may cook sooner. You can also make them and then
freeze them for eating another day. Just put the formed patties in a sealed tupperware container, and put wax paper between each patty layer.
Make The Hot Sauce and Tart Sauce
To make the hot sauce, you can use 2 teaspoons siraccha hot sauce, and 1.5 teaspoons vege mayo, or your preferred mayo. Blending the two together will make the hot sauce less
hot but still somewhat hot.
Make the Tart Sauce - The tarty vinegar sauce is put on the finely shredded carrots and lettuce. First, shred your carrots, 1/4 cup, with a vege peeler, and put them into a
shallow bowl. Then with scissors cut the lettuce into shredded pieces - 1/2 cup, and put them in with the carrots shredded. Then pour 1/2 teaspoon of rice vinegar or white
wine vinegar over the carrots and lettuce. Mix them together so that they are coated with the white vinegar.
Cut The Baquette Buns

You can buy baquette buns in different lengths. The best deal is usually to buy a freshly baked baquette stick and then cut it into the lengths you need. I bought mine at Walmart for a $1. I
cut them in three 6" lengths for my pork deli sandwiches.
Make Your Pork Deli Sandwich
Put the hot sauce on the bottom bun. Then, put the asian pork patty on the bottom bun. Add the carrot and greens topping, and then add the top bun. Wrap it in wax paper and put it
in the Microwave Oven for about 20 seconds, in reheat mode, to warm the bun somewhat. Serve with your favourite drink, wine or beer.
Choose Your Wine
Because of the hot sauce we want to pair a wine that will cool the heat of the hot sauce. For that, we can pair a off dry wine(medium dry, medium), like a off dry white blend, or a off dry riesling.
The off dry body is a tad sweet and this will be a good match for the hot sirracha sauce. The pork burger is not hot but it is a tad spicy and flavourful, and
these types of wine will be a good choice for the seasoned pork patty also.
The carrot and shredded greens topping (mixed with rice vinegar) will be tart tasting and a good wine to match
with tartiness is a wine with good acidity; such as Rieslings, or white blends that have a good acidity.
For the sweetness, choose wine bodies that are medium dry or medium. For the acidity, choose wines with a good acidity level such as Rieslings.
Some other wines that make off dry body styles: Gewürz(Gewurztraminer), and Chenin Blanc.
Our choice for this recipe is Winzerkeller Gerwurz wine from Germany, priced at $14 in Halifax. It has a medium dry body, so it's a tad sweet which is good for the hot sauce.
And, it's aromatic and flavourful, so it
will be a good match for our spiced pork patty. It has flavours of floral, spice, and fruit. The alcohol is 11.5%, residual sugar is 18 g/L and it has medium acidity.
Pair With Non Alcoholic Beer
You can also pair your foods with various beer; alcoholic and non alcoholic. Like wine, some pair better than others, depending on the ingredients in your food and beer.
The Bavaria brand makes two non alcoholic beers that are sold in this area of Canada (Halifax), the Wheat beer and their Original beer. Both are 0.0 alcohol.
Bavaria wheat beer is somewhat sweet, has an exotic fruit like taste, and is a good pairing with our Asian pork sandwich. The sweet exotic fruit taste is a good match
for the hot sauce on the pork sandwich, and the pork patties' seasoned spiciness. Read about Bavaria beers
