Shiraz - Syrah Wines

Wine Types

Shiraz and Syrah wines are from the same grape. Shiraz is a red wine. The most widely planted wine grape in Australia, Shiraz has been a dominant wine for Australia because of its bold, fruity, ripe flavours and drinkabality. Yearly harvest of Shiraz in Australia is about 430,000 tonnes. Other popular grapes from Australia; Chardonnay 406,000 tonnes, and Cabernet Sauvignon 250,000 tonnes.

There are almost 500,000 acres of Shiraz/Syrah in all World Regions. France (160,000 acres) and Australia(100,000 acres) have the most vineyards. Spain has about 50,000 acres, and Chile has the least vineyards of the Shiraz grape with 15,000 acres.

In some regions like Australia, it is named Shiraz, whereas other regions; like France it is named Syrah. Depending on the region where it is grown, the wine can be fruitier or more earthy. Typically, in Australia Shiraz is more fruitier and spicy in style, whereas in France, it is fruity and with earthy notes like mineral.

Syrah from France regions is usually Blackberry, Blueberry and Boysenberry flavours and either tart or jammy. In France, Syrah is sometimes blended with the Grenache grape(light body grape) and the even richer Mourvedre grape, to create a Côtes du Rhône blend. Syrah from France has medium acidity and tannins.

Flavours-Aromas

Shiraz flavours and aromas can include: blackberry, blackcurrant, black cherry, boysenberry, blueberry, plum, red fruit, jammy, licorice, spicy, vanilla, chocolate, coffee, pepper, mineral. Fruit, Mineral and earthy notes are typical of Shiraz from France, regions like Roussillon and Cote du Rhone.

Buying Shiraz Wines

Australia is famous for its Shiraz wines; with most wines being produced in the Barossa, Limestone Coast and Mclaren Vale regions. Australian Shiraz can include many of the mentioned flavours.

Look for brands names like Wolf Blass, who make several distinct Shiraz wines; Jacobs Creek who make a Shiraz and a Shiraz double barreled wine. Mcguigan brand makes several Shiraz as well, each with unique flavours and aromas. Other brands in Australia include Yellow Tail, Lindemans, Banrock Station, and Hardys Nottage.

Wines from Cote de Rhone, France, have blackberry and blackcurrant flavours aromas and mineral notes are common from this region. Look for bottles labelled from these regions/names; Bertrand Grand Terrior Syrah, Bila Haut Chapouter Syrah, and Perrin Vacqueyrales Christins.

In USA, brands like Skinny Girl, make a red fruit and jammy Shiraz with a Light Body. From Chile, brand name - Casa Concha Marques, makes a blackberry, cherry and spice flavoured Shiraz.

Canadian brands Bodacious, and Naked Grape make Shiraz wines. Naked Grape has a bold bodied Shiraz with black fruit, licorice, and spice notes. Bodacious makes a medium bodied jammy Shiraz with blackcurrant, and spice flavours and aromas. These wines can be found in the Wine By Country Section

Wine Style

Many Shiraz brands have a bold and full body. A few wine brands make a lighter body, and some like Skinny Girl brand from USA makes a Light and Fruity Shiraz. The USA and South America Shiraz wines typically have more fruit-driven characteristics with spicy aromas.
