Riesling Wines

Riesling grapes originated from Germany, where this thin skinned grape grows along the steep slopes of the Mosel and Rhine rivers. Germany has close to 60,000 acres planted. Rieslings can be found in Australia(Clare and Eden Valleys), USA, France(Alsace), New Zealand(Marlborough). Riesling grapes are also grown in Austria, South Africa, and Canada.

Some say it is the finest white wine ever made, and as such, would compare to other great wines like Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Wine Types/Style

Riesling have a medium body, high acidity and a honeyed richness. Rieslings can be sweet or dry, and they have good aromas. Riesling is not blended as often as some other popular wine grapes; but in some wine regions is blended with Chardonnay, and Gewurz wine grapes.

Because of their sweetness and acidity they are good with Spicy foods. Rieslings can be aged for many years; especially those from cool climate regions.

Flavours-Aromas

Lime, Lemon, Pineapple, Apricot, Peach, Floral, Honeyed Fruit, Tropical Fruit, Spice, Citrus, Orchard Fruit, Mineral, Nectarine, Crisp Apple, Pear, Honeycomb, Lime Peel, Citrus Blossom, Dried Fruit, are unique to Riesling wines.

Buying Riesling Wines

Germany is known for making the best Rieslings - crisp, refreshing, with good acidity. Many other wine regions are now making quality Rieslings as well. From Alsace, France, Rieslings are very good, and Eden and Clare Valleys in Australia also make good Rieslings. In Clare Valley, notes of citrus acidity, aromas of honeysuckle and toast, with a crisp body.
