Pinot Grigio - Pinot Gris Wines

Wine Types

Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris are the same type of grape. Depending on where the grape is produced, it may be labelled as Pinot Gris or Pinot Grigio. Throughout the world, there are about 70,000 acres of Pinot Grigio, a grayish colored grape.

Pinot Grigio has more acidity than Chardonnay and tastes less sweet. Some cheaper brands are made sweeter, and those made in Alsace France are sweet.

Flavours-Aromas

Flavours and aromas can include: lime, green apple, pear, white peach, exotic fruit, white nectarine, subtle honeyed oak, and floral aromas like mineral and honeysuckle.

Pinot Gris(Pinot Grigio) produced in New World wine regions are lightly oaked and they use some malolactic fermentation to add texture and creaminess to the taste.

Also grown in Canada, Austria, Italy, and Romania. It is not usually aged or oaked in these regions. The style is Dry and Minerally.The sweeter types of Pinot Gris made in Alsace, France have flavours of lemon, honeycomb, and crisp apple taste. Less sweet types are found in the region's Grand Cru's.

Buying Pinot Grigio Wines

For sweeter types, look for wine made in Alsace, France; look for bottle labels that read: Willm or Beblenheim regions. In Alsace, France, the Pinot Gris must contain 100% Pinot Gris, making their wine more complex tasting.

Find Fruity and Dry styles in California, Oregon, Washington, New Zealand, Chile, and Australia. The bottle label will read: Pinot Grigio and the winemakers name. These wines can be found in the Wine By Country Section

Wine Style

Because of their medium to high acidity, most Pinot Grigio - Pinot Gris wines have a Crisp and Light Body style. Some may have a Vibrant and Light body.
