Merlot Wines

Merlot is a red wine. There are about 600,000 acres of merlot planted in world wine regions. Most plantings are in France, Italy, USA, Chile, and Australia. Known for its` fruity flavour, moderate tannins and balanced medium acidity, Merlot is the second most planted grape in the world, and the most planted varietal in Bordeaux France, where it is a blend in the world famous Bordeaux red wines.

Malbec Wines

Malbec grapes are used to make red wines and also used as a blend in other wines such as the Bordueaux red wines. It is only a small percentage of the blend in Bordeaux wines, as Merlot usually makes up the largest blend with 60-70%. Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc are the other blends used.

Wine Types

Compared to other red wines; Merlot is fruitier than Pinot Noir, a little less fruitier than Cabernet Sauvignon, and about half as fruity as Shiraz. Malbec is a wine similar to Petit Verdot, Syrah, and Merlot. Malbec has a bold and rich style.

Flavours-Aromas

Flavours in Merlot grapes include black cherry, plum, raspberry, chocolat, dried herbs. Fruitier and softer tannins can be found in merlot wines from Chile and Australia. Bordeaux red blend Merlot are more rich bodied, earthy. Merlots from cool climate regions can taste similar to Cabernet Sauvignon while warmer climate Merlots are fruitier in taste.

Malbec grape has flavours and aromas of: Black Cherry, Blackberry, Plum, Blueberry, Raspberry, Pomegrante, Herb, Spice, Mineral, Earth. It can be oak aged, adding flavours of coconut, dill, and vanilla. Malbec has medium tannins and acidity.

Buying Merlot Wines

Find Merlot wines from makers such as Wolf Blass, Lindemans, Yellow Tail in Australia. In USA, Bogle, and Benzyer, Barefoot, Sterling Vintners, and Marlo make Merlots from California with raspberry, plum, cherry, herb, spice flavours and aromas.

Because Merlot from Bordeaux wines are blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, you can have flavours of black currant, floral, plum, coffee, liquorice, and mineral.

Wine Drinking Temperature

Like most red wines, Merlot should be served at 64 - 68 degrees F. If you put your bottle in the fridge take it out about 20 minutes before serving time. And, to know how the cold temperature can affect Merlot wine taste(or any red wine), taste the wine right from the fridge temperature, then let it warm to room temperature a tad. Once the wine has warmed a bit, taste it again, and you can now taste the flavours and tannins that you could not taste when the wine was colder.

Blending Grapes

The Merlot grape is blended with other grapes. Common blends include Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet France; Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon.

Wine Style

Wine styles of Merlot can vary from Smooth, to Rich bodied types. Most wine regions have a variety of Smooth and Bold body types.
